I feel like left and right I’m hearing young women and girls express their desire to work from home. But they don’t know what to do, how to go about that, or if that’s even possible for the lives they lead or want to lead. Maybe you’re just looking to make some side money. Maybe you don’t want to go to college. Maybe you have a passion you want to become your job. Maybe you simply have no idea what you want to do at all. Or maybe you’re just stinking lazy…(juuust kidding about that last one, but guess its a possibility haha!) Regardless of the thinking behind this desire, I’m giving you some tips and things to be thinking about in order to pursue working from home!
I work from home. Ever since I was a little girl my desire was to work from home. Not really the college type, ya know? (That’s awesome if you are though! Also awesome if you aren’t!) But personally, my greatest desire was really to one day be a wife and a mother. To minister to my lil family through taking care of our home, my husband, and one day my little ones. However. That did not mean I was forsaking all of my passions, hobbies, and need for creativity! I wanted to do something with those desires as well. With working from home, I would be able (and am able!) to work around my own schedule, make money, pursue my passions, learn new things, have great experiences, and still have time to give to those around me! And I absolutely LOVE it! I’m a music teacher & freelance graphic designer. Both of which I can take with me wherever I move, can schedule around my time, and take on what I know I can. Convenient, right?!
I’m not going to pretend that it was easy or all by my own doing that I found those two things. Looking back I can see God written all over my journey of finding what I wanted to do. I see experiences that prepared me for the next step, so many lessons to push, challenge, and change me in order to be successful in them! I give all the glory to Him, for HIS ideas for my life and for showing me the way to them.
1.) Pray About it. What better place to start than with The One who knows you through and through? The One who sees and knows your future. The ultimate planner. The ultimate guide. Go to God with this desire of yours and ask Him to show you what He would have you do. Ask Him for wisdom and knowledge!
2.) Make a list of your passions, talents, & interests. What makes you happy? What is something you find yourself doing all of the time? What are you really good at? What are your hobbies? What do you know how to do that you could teach others to do? What do you create? What are you interested in? What are you curious about knowing how to do? (Maybe you don’t do it/know how to now, but pursuing a new interest may lead to great things!)
3.) What are things you can do with the things on your list? Â For each thing on your list come up with different jobs or different things you can do with those things. They don’t have to be huge income sources right off the bat! Some things start out small and God takes off and makes them big! Example, maybe you LOVE dogs! You can groom dogs from home. You can pet sit. Maybe you’re crafty! Start researching craft shows, learn about selling on consignment, think about an etsy account, or look into getting your own online website! Photography? Baking? Come up with as many things as possible! And if you’re unsure, look up some options and see what other people have found to do in that same interest field! You may find some things you never really thought about doing from home before that would totally work!
4.) Learn all that you can! You don’t always have to go to college to further learn about something! Nowadays, there are countless ways to learn skills, gain information, get experience, and collect crazy amounts of knowledge on a something. Online classes, local classes, Google, Youtube, a friend or family member, or all of those things! Learn all that you can, anywhere you can. Even if you have to pay to learn, the knowledge will be worth it! Consider it an investment! I didn’t go to college for graphic designing. I taught myself. But I also paid for some online classes to further broaden my knowledge. There’s a lot of things I don’t know, but there’s a lot of things someone with a degree doesn’t always know or remember either. So don’t let “college” stump you up. I did a ton of research. I sat in front of my computer for hours and hours. I designed thing after thing. Messed with multiple programs and learned their ins and outs! God brought me people who needed little jobs and with each job I learned something else until I was (and am) doing “big” jobs! I’ve had some crazy cool God given opportunities through it all, and I’ve grown and learned tons. You may not start out doing exactly what you want, but if you work for it, you’ll get there! It takes work like any other pursuit does. Invest, invest, invest!
5.) Let God lead you! Remember that its okay to start small. Start out doing the little things and watch as God brings you the big things! IT WILL HAPPEN! Pray for opportunities. Keep praying for His guidance. To bring you the people you need to talk to, learn from, do business with. I’ve seen His faithfulness in this time and time again, so I can tell you first hand that He will not fail you. He’ll give you those experiences, He’ll raise those numbers, He’ll give you that knowledge. Remember it’s not your desk that God is sitting at to work for you, It’s GOD’S desk that YOU are sitting at to work for HIM. Include Him in this process. Seek His face in all that you do.
6.) Have patience. It may not happen overnight. It may not happen like you want it to. It may not be what you want it to be. You may not even come up with anything right away. But if you continue to chase God’s will, if you are doing your best, then sit back, relax, and let God do the rest. In His perfect timing, in His perfect way, you will get there! Have faith in the process, have faith in your God.

Girl! I love this. After years in a 9-5 job I hated, I started working from home. I love the flexibility and ability to do what I love. Numbers 5-6 really hit me, because I am in that frustrated phase…feeling completely inadequate with what I am doing and not seeing the results I want. Thank you for encouraging me through this post!
