I am crazy about my journaling Bible! Truly. It’s totally changed the way I do my Bible study. I honestly look forward to reading my Bible more because of it! Maybe you’re interested in getting a journaling Bible yourself. Maybe you already have one. Or maybe you’re just curious as to why I thought it was great enough to blog about it. Whichever it is, keep on readin’ and allow me to gush and elaborate.
One of my favorite hobbies is to hand letter (or “calligraphy” as it’s often called). So having a journaling Bible has been the perfect combination of the two for me. I get to letter IN my Bible! Therefore I really get to make it my own, ya know? I like making my Bible personal. So that includes highlighting, underlining, doodling, or lettering a passage of scripture in the margins. Having a journaling Bible allows me so much freedom to scribble whatever I want, wherever I want. (I know you can still do some of that in just a regular Bible, but there obviously is a big space difference between the two!)

I don’t always use those margins and free spaces for lettering. Sometimes, when I’m doing my Bible study, I write my notes, thoughts, or cross references there instead. I really like doing this because when I go back and read a scripture later on, I have similar scripture references marked beside it and my notes to read from last time. Having those things right there beside the scriptures has actually really come in handy and helped me in many ways later during reading. Or sometimes, I’ll be flipping to a totally different verse but stop to read what I wrote (or lettered!) about something. So it’s like a short lil reminder of that verse, or what I took from it at the time. It’s really neat!
As crazy as this may sound, my journaling Bible actually helps me focus better when reading it. In church, or on my own! When I use it, I’m always looking for things I can write or hand letter in the margins. However, I don’t like to write or doodle just to fill empty spaces. I want what I write there to be meaningful things. Portions of scripture that stand out to me, or thoughts I want to remember. So, personally, it has definitely motivated me to pay closer attention to what I’m reading so that I can “journal” about it as well as spiritually gain from it!
My journaling Bible just altogether makes me excited about God’s precious Word! It excites me to really make my Bible my own, to open it up and see all the bright, pretty, colorful highlights and lettered passages. To dig deeper and not just surface read. To get to have fun with my Bible. I so look forward to my Bible time during the day because I enjoy it so much. Do I read it every single day? Oh gosh, no. But I am much more motivated to make time for it and read it so much more often.
If you like to get creative, journal, hand letter, doodle, or even just take notes, then this way of spicing up your Bible study is right up your alley. Or maybe you’re just interested in trying something new for your Bible time. Hey, I say definitely give it a go! Anything that might motivate you to be more faithful to investing in your relationship with God is worth a shot, amiright?!
