Cream butter and sugar until smooth. About 2-3 minutes.
Beat in vanilla and egg
In a separate bowl, combine spices, salt, flour, and baking powder.
Slowly incorporate the dry mixture into the cream mixture. Mix until dough is a play dough texture. (If you find dough is still crumbly, you may need to work the dough with wet hands instead of the mixer.)
Don't chill the dough. Roll out and cut into 1/4 inches (they are better on the thicker side rather than thinner)
Bake for 6-8 minutes only. They may not look done but will continue to set as they cool!
